Good Question: Why is February American Heart Month?

It can often times be a silent killer and it shows no discrimination.

Heart disease is plaguing this country despite an effort to remind people to be heart healthy.

Good Question: Why is February American Heart Month?

This month we see a lot of Valentine's hearts full of chocolate or with cute bears, but its the one beating in our chest that we should all be focused on in February.

"Here in the state of Kentucky we lose about one out of every three people to heart disease or strokes, so its definitely a big problem here in the state," said Jennifer Ebert with the American Heart Association.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the country, in Kentucky 38 people die everyday because of it.

Since 1963 Congress has required the President to declare February American Heart Month.

Wednesday the American Heart Association rallied at the state capital, Ebert says spreading the message is key.

"Its so important to know our heart health because knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers can really impact the longevity of your life and the quality of your life," said Ebert.

We know the statistics are high for adults, heart disease is the number one killer of women and men are equal targets, but in a world of fast food and a lack of physical activity Ebert says there's an alarming trend emerging.

"We're seeing an increase number of young children now developing heart disease and stroke, so raising awareness in February becomes even more important because the youth really need to pay attention," said Ebert.

The American Heart Association recommends these tips for staying Heart Healthy:
-30 minutes of physical activity for adults
-60 minutes of physical activity for children
-watch your diet
-know your numbers both cholesterol and blood pressure
-talk to your doctor and get regular screenings
