Health experts say obesity levels in this country are at epidemic levels, that's why First Lady Michele Obama wants us all to eat better and she's changing the way we go about getting a balanced meal.
Good Question: How do I know what to eat from the new food plate?
In a country where food choices and obesity go hand in hand, the First Lady is trying to change our habits.
She says the new My Plate initiative is a useful and simple approach to eating healthier and dietitians agree.
"Nutrition has been brought down once again to the common person if you will," said Daniel Stinnett.
Stinnett is a Registered Dietitian for Central Baptist Hospital, he says this practical approach will go a long way in helping people make better decisions.
"You can take the plate method here, you can apply it at home at school, you can apply it when you eat out it makes it much more relevant to people," said Stinnett.
The new My Plate replaces the USDA Food Pyramid that has been around for nearly twenty years and has often times been criticized for being too complicated.
The My Plate approach is very visual using only a nine inch plate.
One half represents vegetables or fruit, the other protein, and grains, with a small side of dairy outside of the plate.
"We are really trying to focus more on fruits and vegetables because with the typical American diet those foods often times are deficient."
Portions are key.
To stay on track remember hints like this, a portion of protein should be no bigger than a deck of playing cards.
