Good Question: When was the last white Christmas?

The forecast for this holiday weekend has some serious snow in it. That means for many the chance of a white Christmas is looking good and that has some quite happy.

Good Question: Doyle in Parkers Lake-When was the last white Christmas?

Snow, its something we've come to know all to well this month, but most people will deal with it to have a white Christmas.

Here in Lexington that hasn't happened recently.

"Its been about ten years since we've had decent snow on the ground, you have to go back to 1999 we had about an inch of snow on the ground Christmas Day," said WKYT Chief Meteorologist TG Shuck.

When it comes to the probability that we'll have a blanket of white on the ground there is a 10% chance of having an inch on the ground, 3% chance of five inches and not much of one for having ten or above.

When it comes to a winter wonderland on December 25th, you have to go all the way back to 1935 for a year where there was a significant amount of snow.

That year we saw about six inches on Christmas.

TG says many of us should remember the 90s when we had back to back years for a white Christmas.

"If you go back to 1992-93 of the last 20 years those two years we had two inches in 92 and 2 1/2 in 93," said Shuck.

We all know Kentucky weather is quirky and we've seen some odd weather over the years.

1935 comes in as the year with the most snow on the ground

1987 was the wettest on record with over two inches of rain.

1982 was the warmest when it was 70.

1983 was the coldest, it was freezing, temperatures were below zero.

"That just shows you how unusual Kentucky weather can be, I guess that's the fun of it, you never know what you are going to get from year to year."

While home improvement stores say salt and shovels have been in high demand, we are told sleds have become a popular item as well.

Its something that might just come in handy this weekend.
