Good Question-Reply All Women's Basketball

Updated: 03/31/2010 - Its probably safe to say Tuesday night many UK fans who never tune in to the women, did so. Many of them hoping to see the Hoops team try to play their way into a place the program has never been before. So for you first timers, we are talking rules and history. We are hitting the Reply All button to some of your UK Hoops questions. What a season for the UK Hoops team, their efforts paid off landing them in the NCAA tournament. What's the history of the women's program in the Big Dance? This is UK's seventh appearance in the tournament, the first since 2006. The last time the women made a run in the Big Dance, we have to go all the way back to 1982. That team was led by Valerie Still, Pattie Jo Hedges and Lea Wise. That year the team fell one win shy of making it to the Final Four, losing to Louisiana Tech, the eventual national champions. Are there different NCAA rules for women's basketball? Yes there are! The women have shorter time to get a shot off, their shot clock is only 30 seconds compared to the men's at 35. The three point line distance is shorter at 19.9 inches. There is no ten second back court violation called in women's college basketball. Jackie in Campbellsville writes: The UK women's team has had days off between tournament games, what do they do? Jackie, I'm told its been all business for the women in Kansas City. The team has been focused on getting ready for each tournament game, no sightseeing, just practice, a lot of film watching and team dinners. Women's basketball became a varsity sport at UK in 1974.
