Classic Kentucky Dried Apple Stack Cake

Cake Ingredients

5 cups all purpose flour, sifted
1 cup sorghum molasses and 1 cup light brown sugar
1 stick butter, softened
1 egg
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1/2 tsp each, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger
4 cups buttermilk

Sift flour into a large mixing bowl. Make a well and
add the dry ingredients and mix. Add butter, mix. Add
egg, mix. Add buttermilk gradually. Mix thoroughly.
Pour about 1 ½ cups batter in 9 inch cake pans. Makes 6
or 7 layers. Bake in a 350 degree oven about 15 minutes.
Test for doneness till a toothpick comes out clean.

Filling

Rinse and cook 2 cups dried apples with plenty of fresh
water until soft enough to mash easily. Add 1 ½ cups
white sugar to taste. Add ½ teaspoon each cinnamon,
allspice, cloves and stir thoroughly.
