Franklin County woman fears for house after landslide

People who live along Big Eddy Road in Franklin County say they're no strangers to high water. They sit just feet from the Kentucky River, but today this stretch of road is closed due to a landslide. That has at least one homeowner concerned about the safety of her house.

Kristina Rouland has lived in this house along the Kentucky River for four years so she's used to seeing the water rise every spring. But this year, she's facing a new threat.

"Our house is up on stilts so we were always told we didn't have to worry about flooding or anything, but of course this is a totally different thing altogether because it could affect the foundation of the house," says Rouland.

The rapid rise and fall of the Kentucky River has washed some of the soil away from the ground below Big Eddy Road. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has shut down a stretch where the road has buckled due to the landslide. Kristina's house sits just above the area where the road has buckled and she's worried any more flooding could be disastrous for her home.

"If the water comes up like it did last year, you wouldn't be able to stand right here because the water would be over your head, which would almost certainly wash all this out, which could potentially wash out some of the foundation of my house. The porch could fall. I wouldn't be able to get into the house."

Kristina says she'll be keeping a very close eye on the river as more rain moves through Central Kentucky over the next day.

"All you can do is sit and wait and see what happens. Hopefully the water just won't come up that high. As soon as the water gets up to the road, we just pack up, get the dog, and head to a friend's house!"

Workers who were on the scene today say they expect this section of Big Eddy Road to be closed for at least the next couple of days.
