SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) - Somerset officials again discussed a proposed smoking ban, but took no action.

The county fiscal court met Wednesday and an anti-smoking coalition presented a petition signed by 36 Pulaski County doctors, urging the court to pass an anti-smoking ordinance.

Al Perkins of the Pulaski County Smoke Free Coalition told member he wanted them to see he wasn't the only advocate for smoke-free public places.

Measure opponent Willie Ramsey said he doesn't want the ordinance because it isn't biblical and because it abridges the property rights of business owners.

I do not think that a smoking ban is necessary.Everyone has bad habits such as overeating: are you going to take away the restaurants to keep people from being obese? What about people who take prescription drugs they are just as addicted to them as an illegal drug user. What happened to being in America and being free?Have we lost that right?I do not go around and tell the doctors or nonsmokers how to live their life.If someone does not, or can not be around smoke due to medical reasons it should be manditory to have a smoking section and a nonsmoking section. I will not eat in a restaurant that does not offer a smoking section because it is my right to smoke and destroy my body.Even people who do not want their babies has the right to destroy the babies by abortion and that is not their bodies that they are destroying.I think people should mind their own business and quit telling everyone how to live their life.So NO we do not need a smoking ban in Pulaski County.

That is funny...a petition signed by doctors that they want a smoking ban, to prove that this guy wasn't the only one who wanted it. OF COURSE doctors would sign that, but how many common ordinary citizens are going to? Sounds like this guy is too lazy to get a real petition started and signed by a bunch of voters, and so he goes somewhere that he knows will sign it...doctors. That would be like getting oil company executives to sign a petition that gas prices need to be raised more...of course they will sign it!

Diane, it's not a matter of non-considerate smokers, it is a matter of public safety. Second-hand smoke is more dangerous than the person smoking it. Did you know that if a person breathes second-hand smoke for an hour, 7 minutes are taken off of their life? In addition, public places should be enjoyed by everyone. What about the people who do not like the smell of smoke? It's not fair for them either. Plus, the people who are not glad that they smoke chose to. It was their decision and a bad one they have to live with.

Years ago we didn't need smoking bans. Smokers were considerate. They generally asked before they lit up. They didn't have to be asked they just went outside. If you smoked you knew what businesses allowed smoking and which didn't. I'm not sure smoking bans are the answer. I think maybe we should let businesses decide. And not punish the considerate smokers with the inconsiderate ones. I think we should have smoking and non smoking environments. After all, few people who smoke are glad they do, And many suffer enough with the addiction. Why punish them even more.
