Springtime in the Bluegrass means lots of rainfall, rising temperatures, and, for many, allergies. We talked to a local doctor who says this is one of the worst allergy seasons he's ever seen.

If you suffer from allergies, you know how it feels.

"Itchy eyes, scratchy throat," says Tara Carlucci.

If you don't, Dr. Doug Tzanetos can describe it.

"Imagine how bad you feel with a cold. Now imagine it for weeks on end," says Dr. Tzanetos.

Dr. Tzanetos of Allergy and Asthma physicians of Central Kentucky says he's been seeing a lot of new patients this spring.

"We're seeing quite a few patients complaining of these symptoms right now so I think it's one of the worst seasons. The tree pollens, which are one of the major pollens outdoors right now are high concentration, projected to go higher by the end of the week into the very high concentration," says Dr. Tzanetos.

He says the reason allergies are so bad has to do with how harsh our winter was.

"It's been so cold that the tree pollens have been delayed a while and now that the wet weather is finally here, people are noticing the symptoms for the first time," says Dr. Tzanetos.

Tara Carlucci says her symptoms started a couple of weeks ago and haven't let up.

"I started feeling it about two weeks ago. Once I start seeing dandelions, I know I'm going to get sick. I just completely feel horrible and don't want to get out of bed," says Carlucci.

Dr. Tzanetos has some good news and bad news for those suffering from allergies. The good news - those with tree allergies should start feeling better around June. The bad news - that means grass allergies should just be starting up.
