College students volunteer time to local organizations

They haven't been on-campus long, but some college freshman are already doing what they can to help their new community.

Students at EKU in Richmond took part in service projects this morning.

Those who participated say they're thrilled to help. Some 2,000 freshmen are moving into EKU this weekend, but they're not just getting settled into their dorms. They're also working on behalf of their community.

Some 600 backpacks were packed at one of the sites called Operation Military Kids. Volunteers also assisted students with making blankets for the Project Linus organization. The blankets are distributed to needy children across our region.

EKU officials say the day's projects not only helped the community but helped these incoming freshmen get off to the right start in college.

This is the 2nd year EKU has hosted the community service project for incoming freshmen. In all, 15 organizations benefited from today's efforts.
