Number of applicants for edcuation commissioner 'encouraging'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - About 40 people have applied to become
Kentucky's next education commissioner - a number that the chairman
of the state Board of Education called "very encouraging."

Chairman Joe Brothers says he is impressed with the applicants. Brothers says there are a lot of qualified people who want to be the next commissioner.

He says the board will continue accepting applications through October, when it expects to name two to four finalists.

It is the second search this year for an education commissioner. The board offered the position to Illinois educator Barbara Erwin. She resigned three days before she was to start work after a series of revelations about her background, including inaccurate information on her resume.
