WKYT-TV to Upgrade its Digital Channel September 1

Updated: Thu 4:29 PM, Aug 26, 2010

Lexington, KY — On Wednesday, September 1 at 1:00pm, WKYT-TV will be changing its digital channel from one on the VHF broadcast band to one on the more powerful UHF broadcast band.

After the digital television conversion mandated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last year, WKYT was issued a VHF channel, which some viewers had difficulty receiving. In January of this year, WKYT received a Construction Permit from the FCC to begin installation of a new transmitter that will move their channel from the VHF band to the UHF band in an effort to reach those affected viewers.

With the new antenna and transmitter in place, WKYT is ready to make the permanent change to the UHF band. At 1pm on Wednesday, September 1, WKYT will cease broadcasting on the VHF channel and begin broadcasting exclusively on the UHF channel. At that time, viewers who receive television signal via an over-the-air antenna will need to re-scan their TV or digital converter box in order to view the new channel. Viewers with cable or satellite service will not be affected.

WKYT and its sub-channels will still appear as channels 27.1, 27.2 and 27.3 on viewers’ TV sets and/or digital converter boxes after the re-scan.

WKYT will have phone operators standing by to answer any questions between 1pm and 9pm on Wednesday, September 1. Viewers having issues re-scanning can call 1-800-500-1513 at that time. Before the shut-off time, viewers can visit wkyt.com/rescan for more information.
