Free Flu Shot Clinic

Lexington residents can use Saturday's free drive-thru flu shot clinic to help themselves and the community.

The free clinic, hosted by the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department in cooperation with Lexmark, will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, on the Lexmark campus. The flu clinic's entrance will be at the Newtown traffic light at the Lexmark entrance. Appointments are not necessary.

In addition to the health benefits of getting a flu shot, those taking part will also be helping the health department test one of its emergency preparedness plans.

The clinic will provide valuable training for the health department's staff to test the ability to administer mass immunizations if an event requiring mass doses of vaccine, such as a flu pandemic, occurs in the region.

The goal is to administer 1,000 shots during the event. The vaccine covers a six-month period, and people are being encouraged to get one as soon as possible to avoid catching the flu.

Flu shots are recommended to protect Kentuckians 65 and older; all children age six months to 23 months; and individuals with a chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer, asthma or diabetes.

Health officials strongly suggest that children aged 24-59 months and healthy people age 50 to 64 years also receive flu immunizations.

An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances of getting the flu. Every year in the United States, approximately 200,000 people will be hospitalized with the flu, and 36,000 will die from the flu or its complications.

Those who can't make the free drive-through clinic will have other opportunities to get a shot. Flu shots will also be available 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's Public Health Clinic at 805 Newtown Circle. The cost is $20, and the department accepts Medicare and Medicaid B.
