Today's announcement highlighted the seriousness of fires on campus and showed the steps UK and colleges across Kentucky will be taking to keep their students safe.
Representatives from colleges across the state gathered as September was declared Campus Fire Safety Month by the governors office.
With students back to school it was decided this was the perfect time to inform students about the dangers of fires on campus.
A device which teaches how to properly use a fire extinguisher will be used at colleges.
Last year UK had 28 fires on campus, none of them resulting in injury. That's a statistic officials hope to maintain.
"We can never over emphasize the importance of fire safety and we can never do enough to be prepared," said Coleman Elridge from the Office of the Governor.
Every Wednesday in the month of September UK will be hosting fire safety clinics, showing students how to properly use a fire extinguisher and teaching them steps they can take to stay safe while they're on campus.
