Tower May Be Allowed To 'Fall On Its Own'

SAND GAP, Ky. (AP) - Officials in southeast Kentucky's Jackson County say it could be weeks before a decision is made on what do with a leaning water tower.

Caldwell Tanks Operations Manager Mike Braden has told officials the tank alongside U.S. 421 at Sand Gap will either be demolished or allowed to fall on its own. Authorities were notified of the tower's tilt Sunday morning. U.S. 421 was then closed, which sent drivers on a 15-minute detour around the county. The highway department reopened the road Monday when it was determined the tower was far enough away from the highway.

After leaning an inch each hour, the tower has slowed considerably. It was constructed on former quarry property.
