Newberry Names New Police Chief

Mayor Jim Newberry today named Assistant Chief Ronnie J. Bastin as Lexington’s new Chief of Police.

Bastin, a 23-year veteran of the force, has served in leadership positions throughout the agency.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to be the new police chief and honored that the committee and Mayor Newberry have the confidence in me to lead the Division of Police,” Bastin said. “With the talent that we have in this department and the supportive community in Lexington, my vision is to make Lexington the safest city of its size in the nation.”

Public Safety Commissioner Tim Bennett, who chaired a committee charged with recommending a candidate for police chief to the Mayor, said Bastin was the group’s clear choice. The nine-member committee included citizens, administration representatives, Councilmember Kevin Stinnett and police representatives, including Chief Anthany Beatty.

Beatty, who will retire as chief at the first of the year, said Bastin is a “straightforward and sincere” individual who has a keen understanding of the community, the agency and an international sense about how the best contemporary police agencies do their jobs.

As an assistant chief who currently serves as the Bureau of Operations commander, Bastin has been a member of Beatty’s management team.

Bastin holds a bachelor’s degree from the University Kentucky, and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Eastern Kentucky University.

He also completed the administrative officers course at the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar.

Bastin has won several distinguished service awards from the Division of Police and his file includes 44 letters of commendation.

Bastin, 50, and his wife, Sandra, have two children, James and Victoria.

The selection of Bastin is subject to ratification by the Urban County Council.
