Members of the community gathered at the Cornettsville volunteer fire department to plan a holiday event in honor of Dr. Sandlin. They say he was very involved in the holiday party at the Leatherwood-Blackey clinic where he worked.
They thought it would be a good idea to put on their own holiday event for the entire community in memory of him.
Dr. Dennis Sandlin's loved ones say he was passionate about the Leatherwood-Blackey clinic's annual christmas party.
"It was something he enjoyed doing. It was something that was important to him. The children of this community were important to him," said Danny Rose, a close friend of Sandlin.
The community decided to start their own holiday event called the Dr. Sandlin Memorial Christmas in the Park.
"He always liked to have a good time and he loved the community so we thought we could give the community something back," said Danielle Sandlin, the daughter of Dr. Sandlin.
"We thought this was something that would help heal our community," said Susan Hull, a close friend and former co-worker of Sandlin.
The event will take place at Leatherwood Memorial Park and it will include everything from food and music to games and maybe even christmas presents. Sandlin says she hopes everyone in the community will get on board.
"People loved my father and they've always asked what they could do for the christmas party at the clinic so we're hoping they all come out and help us," said Sandlin.
They are looking for monetary donations and volunteers to help organize and prepare for the event. For more information, you can contact Danielle Sandlin at 859-338-4590.
The event is supposed to take place on December 4th, but if there is bad weather, they'll move it to the following weekend on December 11th. The group is still deciding on a time, but will be meeting again to discuss more details.
