Officials at The Kentucky Kernel, the University of Kentucky's student newspaper issued an apology for Friday's controversial political cartoon.

The cartoon featuring a black man, shackled to an auction block, being bid-on by fictitious Greek organizations.

On Monday the paper printed an apology saying:

"Neither the cartoonist nor the editors at the kernel intended for the cartoon to be hurtful. but our intentions are irrelevant. the cartoon unnecessarily hurt many of our readers, and i apologize for it being published."

Despite the fact that the political cartoon was drawn by a University of Kentucky student, and affected UK students, UK officials say they take no responsibility for the cartoon or it's aftermath.

They say The Kentucky Kernel is an independent publication with the right to publish what it wants.
