Fire at murder suspect's home considered suspicious

A home goes up in flames and investigators say it's suspicious because the person who lives there is in jail for murder.

The mobile home, on Bardstown Road in Anderson County, near the Spencer County line, is the same home where a woman was murdered earlier this month.

Police say Gary Bancroft, who lives at the home, killed his girlfriend, Renee Mobley, then hid her body there.

A man returning home from work spotted the flames at the home early Wednesday morning and called for help.

By the time firefighters got to the scene, they say flames were coming out of every opening at the trailer.

Because of the crime police say happened at the home, the Anderson County fire chief says investigators are not ruling anything out.

"There are a number of things that make it (the fire) suspicious," Anderson County Fire Chief Mike Barnes said. "The time of night, the remote location, we just want to rule all those out."

Along with a state police fire investigator, a K-9 unit was brought to the scene to sniff for any accelerants.

Bancroft is currently in jail. The murder charge against him has been sent to the grand jury.
