Governor's Race Debate Focuses On Ethics

Posted: Tue 7:35 AM, Oct 16, 2007

Gubernatorial candidates used a prime-timedebate to deliver harsh criticism of one another on ethics issues.
Republican Governor Fletcher last night accused his Democratic
challenger, Steve Beshear, of profiting from the bankruptcy of a
Kentucky company. Beshear charged that the governor violated state
hiring laws to reward his political supporters.

Fletcher claimed Beshear made millions from the bankruptcy of
Kentucky Central, while hundreds of employees lost jobs and
investors lost money.

Meanwhile, Beshear said Kentuckians deserve a more ethical
governor, not one who has been indicted on charges of illegally
rewarding political supporters with state jobs. Fletcher was
indicted last year, but the indictment was later dropped in a
negotiated settlement with prosecutors.
