LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - U.S. District Court Judge Jennifer Coffman has become the first woman to be named chief judge of a federal court in Kentucky.
It happened when U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Hood officially took senior status on Sunday. The 59-year-old Coffman had broken gender lines before. In 1993 she was the first woman appointed to the federal court in Kentucky.
She serves in both the Louisville-based Western District and the Lexington-based Eastern District of Kentucky. She went to work yesterday in Louisville.
Besides hearing cases, Coffman will now be in charge of such things as budgeting and overseeing staff. Judges can keep the job for a maximum of seven years.
