UK Opera Program Gets Boost From Gift

Updated: Wed 8:37 AM, Oct 17, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - The University of Kentucky opera program is getting a one million dollar gift from former residents of the state who now live in Florida.

The William E. Schmidt Foundation has made the donation to the UK Opera Theatre on behalf of Schmidt and his wife, Casiana, of Irvine.

Director Everett McCorvey of the UK Opera Theatre says the gift puts the UK opera program closer to the funding necessary to take it to Top 20 status. The William E. Schmidt Foundation has been devoted to encouraging people in the arts.
