Simulated School Shooting Teaches Cops To Respond With Little Backup

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) - Law enforcement officers from eight states are in southeastern Kentucky today for training in school shootings.

The simulation in Whitesburg, Kentucky, is one of the largest ever staged by the National Tactical Officers Association.

The tactic is no longer to wait for SWAT teams or back up.

Law enforcement officers practiced overpowering an armed suspect with four or fewer officers at the training session.

Don Alwes ("ALL-weez") is an instructor with the association. He says the primary focus was to teach the officers how to take down a shooter to avoid any more shootings.

According to the National School Safety and Security Services, about 245 deaths nationwide have resulted from school violence since the Columbine massacre of 1999.
