CAMPTON, Ky. (AP) - State and local officials attended a groundbreaking ceremony today at Campton for a 48 (m) million-dollar project to widen a section of the Mountain Parkway.

Other than pavement resurfacing and bridge deck replacement, officials say it's the first noteworthy improvements to the parkway since it opened in 1963.

The project will include widening the parkway to four lanes between exits 43 and 46. It also will include the addition of a ramp from northbound Kentucky 15 at Campton to the eastbound lanes of the parkway.

Officials say the section being widened has been the scene of 18 accidents in the last three years, resulting in eight serious injuries and one fatality.

Governor Fletcher said today the project will improve the quality of life in the region for generations to come.

Talk of widening part of the twisting, two-lane highway has been an issue for decades. Some mountain residents had questioned the timing of today's ceremony, coming a little more than two weeks before voters decide whether to re-elect or replace Fletcher.

Hey Bill from Eastern Ky, I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but we tried, VA wouldn't take you. We are still working out a deal with Rhode Island though, Eastern KY a lobster, a two pencils and a player to be named later. I'll keep you updated.

Sorry, but Mr. O does have a point - it is scary how many posts there are with incorrect grammar and spelling.

I agree with J from Wolfe Co. The money should be used for other things, like teaching him how to spell. That's probably why his parents named him J, so he wouldn't #$% it up. Reading stuff like this make me wonder if we need a road over there at all. All it will do is encourage people like this to move around the state and possibly mate. Republican or Democrat, I think we can all agree this wouldn't be good for the state.

there has been talk of this project for years and was started in prestonsburg once with all the money being used before leaving the city as someone else said the wrecks are due to people not paying attenion or falling asleep. but my opion is that this money should be used throughout the county like breathitt co. to blacktop all roads which school buses travel and to give all people throughout the county water and sewage but like it has always been our leaders dem. and rep. are more interested in getting rich than helping our people.

i dont think campton will loose any business, everyone that travels that road knows camoton is there, all they are doing is making it safe. if they was not puting an exit then I would think that it would hurt things.

Eastern Ky. would be better off if they would give us back to Va.At least there the rds. are two lanes wide. The parkway needs to be 4 lanes all the way to US23 and 460.NOW

Posted by: shawn Location: eastern ky on Oct 21, 2007 at 10:42 PM
look wolfe co all this is is a bigger bypass to campton and all your business if he wants to buy our votes he should spend some money on our county roads like sandy ridge and the others that the county does a half a#% job on and get us some city water when we get rid of him we the people he don't care about might get something done

48 million dallors for a road we dont need its to later to buy your way in dont waste the money use it for some thing better people wonder why gas prizes are so high his giving the money away to the croks of wolfe county he should have just hung the money out to the people that showed up at the ground breaking at least the people of wolfe county would have got it an the wrecks that happed on these roads happen cause of people not paying an attencion to what there doing or because he raised the speed limit use the money to build a new court house its in need build a park we have 3 ele. middleschool an high school that could use help iam sure or i no theses school could use something to help the learning for the kids stid of a road that not nessary at all........all iam say is why waste the money on something in wolfe count when it could use other stuff that wolfe county need worser there even road the buses travel on that are in greater need or even water to more home come on .

I think it's great that the project is finally started it should have been done years ago but due the last governor and the democrats of Wolfe,Morgan counties. the project always been put aside so they could lining their pockets off of the locals if it had been done before there would be more jobs in Eastern Kentucky. Way to Go Flecther you got my vote

Here's another one for the republican party. In the '50s and '60s it was no secret that the dem. party could control the people of east ky. with a 5# box of cheese. At last those day's have passed, and so has the cheese.
