Dead Infant Found On Bellarmine Campus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a newborn whose body was found on the campus of Bellarmine University.

The baby was found about 12:30 a.m. EDT in Anniversary Hall, a dormitory, Louisville police spokesman Phil Russell said.

Russell said the department's homicide unit is investigating the death.

Police were also awaiting the results of an autopsy. The Jefferson County coroner's office said results of that autopsy would not be released on Wednesday.

Bellarmine is a Catholic liberal arts college in Louisville.

The school's president, Joseph McGowan, alerted students to the "heartbreaking news of a death investigation involving a newborn
on campus" in an e-mail Wednesday morning.

"I know you will join me in keeping the mother, the newborn who died, and all of our students, faculty and staff, in our thoughts and in our prayers," McGowan wrote.

A university spokesman said about 200 students live in Anniversary Hall.
