Hunter Finds Remains; Now Police Investigate Murder

Updated: Fri 11:50 AM, Oct 26, 2007

Kentucky State Police are back on the scene after human remains were found along side the Martha Layne Collins Bluegrass Parkway in central Kentucky on Wednesday.

Police are now calling this a homicide investigation.

Troopers said the skeletal remains were found at mile marker 54 at about 11:24 a.m. by a hunter scouting for deer. The remains were at the bottom of a hillside just off the westbound lanes.

State forensic anthropologist Dr. Emily Craig recovered the bones and took then to Frankfort for an autopsy. Investigators tell 27NEWSFIRST they are a white female, who was between 5'5" and 5'8", in her late teens to early 20's.

They say the bones have likely been in the wooded area for a maximum of 36 months. The woman was also wearing dark colored pants.

Officials hope to identify the skeleton using dental records.

Investigators are now using metal detectors and other equipment to search the area. Police are now looking at missing persons reports in surrounding counties to see if anyone matches the description of the remains.

Investigators plan to meet on Monday at the Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. They say they hope to piece the evidence together to help figure out who the murder victim is.
