Woman Fit To Stand Trial In Quadruple Murder Case

Video will be available shortly

A judge ruled on Thursday that a Jessamine County woman is competent to stand trial for the deaths of four people.

Police charged Melissa Helton with murder after a fiery crash in back in August of last year. Investigators say she was driving drunk when she crashed, killing three children and one adult.

On Thursday, defense lawyers and prosecutors met behind closed doors for more than an hour. In addition to the competency ruling, attorneys for Helton also asked for a change of venue. They say they don't think she can get a fair trial in this area because of intense media coverage.

Helton will be back in court later this month to learn whether or not the judge will grant that change of venue request.

Her trial was supposed to begin earlier this month but was delayed because of Thursday's competency hearing.
