The State Transportation Cabinet has a change of heart. Just two months after announcing plans to widen US 25 in Scott County to four lanes.
To do so, it meant un-earthing over 30 graves at the Crestlawn Cemetery just inside the county.
While the expansion project is still a go. The original design was altered after the Cabinet was met by heavy resistance from family members of loved ones buried in the cemetery.
David Thacker, with the Transportation Cabinet, says after several informational meetings were held for the public, to voice their concerns over the project, the Cabinet re-evaluated their decision and found a way to minimize the impact on the cemetery, by raising the grade of the proposed roadway and moving it 36-feet to the east from its original position.
By doing this no graves will be disturbed. The project is expected to begin early next year with completion in 2010, in advance of the World Equestrian Games.
