The man accused of killing a Lexington firefighter will stay in a state mental hospital instead of facing trial.

Patrick Hutchinson is accused of shooting his wife and then killing Brenda Cowan, a firefighter who responded to the scene back in 2004.

Hutchinson was charged with two counts of murder, among other charges, but those charges were dropped when he was sent for psychiatric care.

Those charges would stand if he's ever ruled competent to stand trial.
