Today, a confirmation hearing was held for the man expected to become Lexington's next police chief.
Back in October, Mayor Jim Newberry named Assistant Chief Ronnie Bastin as the successor to Chief Anthany Beatty.
Beatty is retiring for a job at UK.
The council unanimously approved Ronnie Bastin during today's confirmation hearing, but before they vote, they had some questions.
Bastin was asked what he sees as a priority moving forward with the department.
He says he wants to see a more mature agency in the years to come, saying they've hired a lot of new officers in the past few years. But he wants to work on ways of growing each officer's experiences within the department.
Bastin also pointed to the gang presence now in the city, saying task forces need to be put in place to stop the spread.
Bastin spoke to 27 NEWSFIRST after the hearing, and says he plans to start at the beginning of the New Year with some big shoes to fill.
The council still has to have two more votes before Bastin will officially become chief.
That is expected to happen before January 7th, when he is expected to take over.
Bastin was the Operations Commander for the crash of Comair Flight 5191.
