Pulaski County Check Forger Says Drugs Made Him Steal
Brian Cook says he stole checks, and cashed them at Wal-Mart and Kroger for one simple reason.
“Just trying to find a way to get high,” says Cook who is faced with eight counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Police say Cook stole eight checks from a friend's mother then took them to the stores where he was never questioned. He says he's surprised at how easy it was.
“I made up a driver's license number and they put it in and they never asked me for an ID or anything,” says Cook from the Pulaski County Detention Center.
He used the checks to buy various items, but mostly gift cards to exchange for cash, which he says he used to buy Oxycontin pills.
He says he's got a message for anyone who considers forging checks during the busy holiday season.
“You want to be home for Christmas; come on, you don't want to be in here. Nobody in their right mind would want to be in here,” says Cook.
Police say the victim's bank called her when the $8000 dollars Cook stole was drawn out so quickly.
“Yes, the bank works with her. She can fill out affidavits of forgery. She'll be getting her money back,” says Trooper Anthony Phillips.
