Police: Georgetown Student Took Own Life

Updated: Thu 1:57 PM, Nov 29, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) - A State Police review of the investigation into the death of a Georgetown College student has reached the same finding -- suicide.

Eighteen-year-old Remy Okonkwo was found hanged in a fraternity dormitory in March.

Police in Georgetown investigated and declared the case a suicide.

In a letter dated Monday, KSP Major Mike Sapp wrote to Georgetown Mayor Karen Tingle-Sames, stating the state agency reviewed the local investigation and concurred.

Okonkwo's family and the Justice Resource Center in Louisville asked the mayor for further investigation in September.

The Reverend Louis Coleman of the center says the state police didn't do what the family asked, but simply reviewed the investigation already done. Coleman calls that unacceptable and says civil rights advocates will continue to press for answers.

The student's body was found in the kitchen of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Georgetown College is a small Baptist Church-affiliated liberal arts college about 12 miles north of Lexington.
