Upgrading Streets and Sidewalks In Downtown Lexington

Updated: Fri 5:52 PM, Nov 30, 2007

With the 2010 World Equestrian Games getting closer, the city of Lexington is looking to give downtown a makeover.

The latest on the to-do list is the process of beautifying sidewalks and streets.

In a news conference today, Mayor Jim Newberrry laid out those plans, emphasizing the importance of improving downtown Lexington.

The city has hired a consultant for the project, but the mayor says the city doesn't know yet where it'll get the money for the improvements. Mayor Newberry says the next step is to begin to identify possible means of funding, including state and federal assistance where appropriate, and he says he hopes for some public-private partnerships.

The mayor also says the design process for the project should be finished in 6 to 8 months.
