The jury of eight men and four women had more than two days of testimony and evidence to go over, but in the end, it took less than two hours to deliver the verdict.
The verdict was not guilty. The jury found that Trooper Burton isn't to blame for recklessly causing Billy Phillips death in the Adair County Jail.
The jury bought the claim that Trooper BJ Burton was just trying to protect himself from Phillips, who was being booked at the jail after being arrested for drunk driving.
Prosecutors argued that Burton laid into Phillips with two elbow strikes, a kick and a knee, which they say caused him to slam his head on the jail floor and die four days later.
However, it was a case the Commonwealth said wasn't easy to prosecute a police officer.
