Hazmat crews are working to clean up a mysterious spill outside the Boyle County fire department.

State environmental crews spent most of the evening at the spill scene off Highway 34, northeast of Danville.

A person reported the spill late Wednesday afternoon. It's a few hundred feet behind the fire station on private property near a creek. Investigators aren't sure yet what the substance is, or if it is harmful.

Cleanup crews will return to the scene Thursday. There are some homes near the spill, but no one has been evacuated.
