Millions Provided For Newtown Pike Expansion

Mayor Jim Newberry and Congressman Ben Chandler announced new details for a planned expansion of Newtown Pike.

The two announced they have received more than 40 million dollars in grant money for the project.

The proposed extension will develop a four-lane corridor from Main Street to an area near UK.

Officials have hoped the extension will be complete by 2010, for easier access to the Kentucky Horse Park in time for the World Equestrian Games.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry wants a bridge that people will remember.

Newberry says a "signature bridge" will span Town Branch as part of the Newtown Pike extension project.

Recalling San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Boston's Zakim Bridge over the Charles River, Newberry said Monday such a bridge would welcome visitors with a strong statement about community pride and history.

Asked what the bridge might look like, the mayor he's the last guy who should try to design it. The city has hired an engineering firm and concept bridges haven't yet been discussed.

Construction on the extension began last month with an aim of better access to the University of Kentucky campus.
