Romeo, the Labrador is happy and healthy now. However, on June 10th, Ronald Shawn Turner's neighbors witnessed and videotaped Romeo endure abuse. That video shows the dog choked, hit, and slammed to the ground.
Turner's defense in court was the dog had bitten him twice and several attempts to control him didn't work.
“I lost my head,” Turner told jurors during his trial. “I lost my mind. All train of thought. What I did was inexcusable and I'm ashamed of it.”
Turner was convicted of animal cruelty charges and he's now serving four months in jail. But Romeo's future isn't quite as clear.
“He's very happy from what I'm told and doing very well. We would like to see him stay right where he is,” says Bill Lippert of the Pulaski County Humane Society.
Romeo is on a farm in the care of a local veterinarian. Motions have been filed to determine Romeo's permanent home.
