Scattered showers and storms continue to push across the region. Local high water issues remain possible through the evening.
PHELPS, Ky. (AP) - A student at an eastern Kentucky high school set off firecrackers in her pocket Wednesday morning, leading officials to dismiss school, the superintendent said.
Pike County Schools Superintendent Roger Wagner said the incident likely was a prank gone bad.
"Some little girl had firecrackers in her pocket and they went off," he said.
The girl was being treated for burns but did not sustain life-threatening injuries, Wagner said. Five other students were being checked out for hearing injuries. No other injuries were immediately reported.
The students were evacuated at about 10 a.m. and sent home shortly after.
Kentucky State Police and a bomb squad were investigating the
scene, said spokesman Trooper Scott Hopkins.
No other details were immediately available.
