Drivers frustrated with new double crossover diamond

It's only been open for a few days, but already, drivers say they're frustrated with Lexington's new double crossover diamond on Harrodsburg Road at New Circle Road.

Transportation officials say the project has consistently exceeded deadlines.

While construction is moving quickly, officials say some drivers feel traffic is not so smooth along Harrodsburg Road.

Many drivers are worried about just how well the new system will work during peak travel times.

Road officials say one more lane will eventually open in each direction of Harrodsburg Road at the interchange.

"I know there have been some concerns with the ramps at New Circle, and just traffic flowing through the intersection, but the third lane, once it's in place, will eliminate the congestion and backups," Natasha Lacy with the Kentucky Department of Highways said.

Additional turn lanes at the Pasadena and Alexandria Drive intersection will open as well.

Road officials say the city of Lexington is also working on traffic lights in the area, which could be causing some of the headache right now.

"The city of Lexington is working very hard to tweak the lights and work on the signals to get timing correct," Lacy said.

Although ahead of schedule, officials expect the double crossover diamond construction project to be finished in November. Crews will also be adding bike lanes and pedestrian paths.

Road officials say so far, no accidents have been reported at Harrodsburg Road and New Circle since the redesigned intersection opened.
