Armed Robbery Suspect Shot By KSP Trooper

LONDON, Ky. (AP) - A state trooper in eastern Kentucky has been placed on paid administrative leave following a shooting incident last night.

Trooper Tony Dingess and McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner were responding to a report of an armed robbery when they pulled over a car driven by Mickey Stephens, 31, of Pine Knot, Ky.

Stephens then allegedly walked out of the car and began walking toward the officers, pointing a gun at them in the process. Police said Stephens ignored commands to drop his weapon, and was shot by both Dingess and Skinner. He was airlifted to UK Medical Center for treatment.

Stephens was charged with five counts of wanton endangerment and one count of possession of a controlled substance.
