BARDWELL, Ky. (AP) - A pre-dawn fire gutted a small courthouse in far western Kentucky on Wednesday morning, a county official said.
Carlisle County's one-story courthouse caught fire sometime before 6:30 a.m. EST Wednesday. Officials said no one was inside when it started.
Firefighters remained on the scene nearly five hours after the blaze ignited, but only smoke and smoldering areas remained late Wednesday morning.
John Roberts, the county's judge-executive, said the building was almost totally destroyed. Only the outer brick walls were left standing, he said.
"I would thought have thought it would have held up better than it did," Roberts said. "But once it caught fire, it raced through that structure."
Roberts, whose office was in the building, said about two dozen employees worked at the courthouse.
