A new piece of equipment at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington is giving patients a chance to walk again.
The Lokomat helps people with spinal cord and brain injuries, as well as people with other neurological impairments, improve their mobility.
The Lokomat lifts a patient out of a wheelchair and places him or her in a standing position on a treadmill. Robotic devices attached to the patient's legs provide support and mimics the motion of walking.
The machine was bought thanks to an anonymous donation made in honor of Dusty Hicks. Hicks, a high schools student from Versailles, was injured in a diving accident this summer. He now uses the Lokomat to help him improve his motor skills.
Cardinal Hill is the only facility in the state where this type of treatment is available to the public.
