WASHINGTON (AP) - Mining company Massey Energy has agreed to pay $30 million over allegations that it routinely polluted hundreds of
waterways in Kentucky and West Virginia.
Massey is the country's fourth-largest coal producer.
The Richmond, Virginia-based company is accused of allowing
sediment-filled waste water and coal slurry to pollute creeks and rivers over a seven-year period.
The company must pay $20 million in fines to the government and
$10 million to install pollution control equipment at its 44 mines and terminals.
The Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency
announced the settlement Wednesday.
