A 13-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the stomach in what police call an accidental shooting.
Kentucky State Police say the boy and two other teeenagers found a gun while riding bikes Tuesday night near Little Buck Creek Road and Old Landing Road in Estill County.
They started playing with it when it went off, according to investigators.
The boys told police they each held the gun, which was a .22 revolver with a wooden handle.
They say when they first started pulling the trigger, nothing happened.
Then, police say when the 14 year old had the gun pointed toward the 13 year old, it went off.
Police are trying to figure out what exactly caused the gun to fire.
"It's questionable whether or not the 13-year-old was trying to get the gun out of his hand, or whether the 14-year-old pulled the trigger and the gun went off," says Kentucky State Police Detective Charles Bowman.
That 13 year old was airlifted to UK Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Wednesday morning.
Family members of the children involved didn't want to comment when contacted by WKYT Wednesday.
The names of the children haven't been released.
