FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A bill before the Kentucky Legislature would provide felony charges for illegal immigrants, strip employers of business licenses and make local governments enforce federal immigration law.
The sponsor is Rep. Bob Damron - a Nicholasville Democrat - who says Kentucky must stiffen immigration legislation or risk becoming a sanctuary if neighboring states do so.
Among provisions is one that would give the state Homeland Security office jurisdiction over local and state agencies on immigration issues.
A lobbyist for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce says the group has some concerns. An immigrant rights group withheld immediate comment.
