Could Deadly New Circle Crash Have Been Prevented?

It was a crash that shut down a major Lexington road for hours.

Police say Dwyane Terry was speeding when he lost control of his car Thursday night. It went airborne over the median and slammed into two vehicles heading in the opposite direction.

The crash happened on a section of New Circle Road that doesn't have the cable barriers in the median, leading some to question if the deadly crash could have been prevented.

Road department officials say the crash may have been avoided, but only if some drastic changes were made to the road and those changes would come with a very hefty price tag.

Accidents along New Circle are often violent collisions, especially when one vehicle crosses the median. It's a problem the commonwealth addressed when it installed wire barriers.

Road department officials say the barriers have been even more effective than they has even hoped.

But as far as those barriers are concerned, that project is complete. There are still sections of New Circle that don't have any separation what-so-ever. It has to do with the shape of the median.

The barriers end near the Leestown Road exit.

David Thacker, who works for the state, says a raised median acts like a ramp, sending a fast-moving vehicle airborne. That's exactly what police say happened last night.

So, according to the transportation department, installing wire barriers along a raised median would do no good.

That doesn't mean there is no solution to this problem but fixing it would come with a hefty price tag. The road department says to install a barrier along that section of road, they would have to widen the road to three lanes on each side and construct a concrete barrier in the median.
