The “General Store” has been somewhat of a legendary call in radio shows for years in the Lincoln County area.

People call in with almost anything you can think of to buy or sell. But one recent call was quite different.

“Someone even made the comment; you could hear the despair in her voice,” said Morning Show Announcer Jayme Phillips of the caller.

A woman said she needed to sell her car to pay for a trip to Cleveland to attend her father's funeral.

“She wasn't asking for help. That's what makes this so unique. She wasn't on there begging for help,” said Phillips.

Later, the host took another call in response.

“She answered the phone. The guy said, ‘Renee, my name is Billy and I would like to help this lady out’.”

That “Billy” turned out to be none other than Billy Gillispie and sure enough, after the call for help turned to be legit, a check arrived from the UK coach himself.

Announcers say why Billy Gillispie was listening to a "buy-sale-trade" call in show an hour’s drive from Lexington isn't important.

“He just heard a need, and like Renee said, it really didn't matter who he was. He was just a man with a kind heart and he just did the right thing.”

This reply is to Jessie and anyone who thinks that I didnot respect coach G. first off we turned down wlex 18 on the story, 2nd we turned down the danville newspaper. But then Larry Vaught called someone in Lexington and got the story from them and ran it on Valentine Day paper. Then Wkyt's Phil Pendleton ask for the story I said no he would have to ask the station owner and he said if it was ok with coach. Wkyt manager called and ask him and he said he did not do it for attention but since it was out that it would be okay then and only then did I do the story I think it was awesome what he did I would never want to take anything away from that.I never realized this message board was here or I would have said this sooner, So again thanks to Billy G, for listening to WPBKFM if I'm aloud to spread a little more butter Thanks alot Jayme Phillips

May God bless the UK Coach. This shows there are still afew good people out there. I'm glad this woman got to go to her father's funeral.

Hey coach, I need 500 million dollars just in case this casino thing doesn't get passed. Can you spare a brother a dime?

Posted by: Grandma Location: Lexington on Feb 21, 2008 at 01:37 PM
I'm just glad the woman got to attend her father's funeral. I'm also glad the news was passed along to the public. The media is so quick to print anything bad a head coach, teacher, politician, etc, does. God Bless the Coach and as another person has already stated, his reward will come. Let the critics have their say. How sad to look at the negative side.

What an AWESOME act of kindness by Coach Gillespie! He didn't have to help the lady he heard on the radio, but his heart went out to her, and I'm sure if others out there could have afforded to help her they would have. Thanks, Coach Gillespie for showing that there are people out there willing to help others. Its nice to see in this day and age when all you see is the bad stuff!

Good Deed what you did helping that lady out with her money problems. I sure wish he would send me 3 tickets to a UK home game for me , my wife and stepson i would love the tickets to be behind the bench.

With all the rumors going around about how poor Billy G's character is its good to hear about him doing something like this. I wish all the rumor starters would stop and read what he DID do instead of making stuff up. I know this isn't the forum to talk about rumors against the Coach but at least we here have evidence of something he did do. I commend him on his helping this lady out during her hardship and I pray for comfort and peace to her during her time of grief.

I think Billy G done a great thing.Leave him alone, he gets all the publicity he neeeds being head coach at UK. People need to get a life. Jealous are we?

Posted by: Jessie Location: Stanford on Feb 20, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Way to go Billy G, but is so sad that you tried to help someone and keep it private, and the radio station could not grant you that one once of respect. Jayme had to get on their and spill the beans like he was someone special. Kudos to you coach, Shame on you Jayme Phillips. Not all news needs to be spread like butter.

To Tracy: "Not to be mean or anything" is always followed by a mean comment. Try to be original with your jealousy. Bill G did an exceptionally nice thing. Some people can't seem to accept that other people have the means to help and will. It would have been just fine if that check had your name on it. Note to self: be humbled and gracious in the presence of acts of kindness.

I agree with Tracie. Let me call in and offer that woman a check and it wouldn't have made it in any newsreel or highlight. It all depends on WHO you are when you help someone.

I think what coach Billy Gillespie did for the woman in Lincoln Co. was the most awesome act of kindness. It's nice to know that there are still people who actually care for others in need and don't do "good deeds" for attention and or publicity. Thanks Coach for ALL your hard work and kindness.

Posted by: Jeb Location: Ky on Feb 20, 2008 at 08:57 AM
I have to agree with Tracie on this one to a certain extent. If the help wasn't given by a high profile individual like Coach Billy, we never would have heard anything about it. With that said, it was a very kind gesture which he didn't have to do and he did try and keep it confidential according to reports I have heard. All in all, it is nice to hear about an act of kindness but I wish we could hear about the Average Joe (or Josephine) who do this on a daily basis and might not have the means that Coach Billy G. has.

Dana, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Went last year and this year to Athens to watch my Cats play. They can play defense.Coach is a class act. He will be rewarded later for the good deeds he does now and in the future. I am from Ky and been a Cat fan all my life. He will turn that program around.

Sounds to me like our coach is not only from Texas, but also has a HEART the size of Texas. I hope he is around for a long, long time. Way to go Billy. God bless you and our CATS!!!

Dear Coach, I need $250 MILLION bucks to fix my sewer problem. Love Jim.

Posted by: Dana on Feb 19, 2008 at 04:33 PM
I have to disagree Tracie...I personally am tired of hearing about all the bad things people do....I dont care if its me or the head coach of Kentucky Basketball doing something good for someone...People need to hear about it....Thank God above for people that do these little things for other people.....it gives me peace knowing that God is still dealing with people to bring them to each others aid in times of need.....and Thanks Billy G and all the others that might not have made the evening news with your good deeds.....

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Kentucky on Feb 19, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Tracie... if it had been you to receive this wonderful gift you would not be so quick to judge. Very classy act there Coach! There IS still some good people left here in this ole world!! God Bless You!

Posted by: Tracie on Feb 19, 2008 at 04:01 PM
Not being mean or anything but had then been any other man nothing would of been said about it. But because he he is the U.K. coach it has made big news. People do nice things evryday but you don't read about it.

way to go billy, your action's speak louder than word's, i have been a UK fan all my life, through thick and then, win or lose, i will stand by you and the player's too. God bless you and the player's

I think that's the nicest thing the coach could have done. You don't think people out there who don't know you then they surprise you. Go Billy and CATS!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Bill Location: KY on Feb 19, 2008 at 02:50 PM
This is an awesome story, although I have no respect for the person who broke this story (Sportswriter of the Year, LOL) against Billy's wishes.

Posted by: Sue on Feb 19, 2008 at 01:29 PM
I hope he wasn't driving and talking on the cell phone when he called in.

For the caller, I'm sorry for her loss. My thoughts and prayers are with her. For Coach Gillispie, how thoughtful!!!! What a heartwarming story.

Posted by: Ironic on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:34 AM
that he helped someone in "Lincoln" county on President's Day. I'm not a UK basketball fan but my hat is off to Billy G. for this kind gesture.

Posted by: Frank Matheny Location: Lex KY on Feb 19, 2008 at 01:42 AM
I can understand why he wanted to keep this quiet. Now he will have to worry about people trying to take advantage of him by people trying to hit him up for money. Saying you helped her you can help us also.

Posted by: richard Location: winchester on Feb 18, 2008 at 11:01 PM
that was so kind and very thoughtful, really just some good ol southern hospitality, now get them (edited) cats winning

I think Billy G is a good person; he is down to earth and good hearted. God bless him for helping this lady out.

Posted by: Carol Location: KY on Feb 18, 2008 at 09:16 PM
OK...that does it...Billy's in my heart to stay now!! Never mind that he didn't always really answer reporters questions when his team wasn't doing well...This proves he's a good fellow, in my book, and I'd rather see a coach who gets life right than a team that always gets basketball right! You go Billy and UK!!!

Posted by: Debbie Location: Robertson Co. on Feb 18, 2008 at 09:01 PM
This is wonferful to know that there are still people that care enough to help a stranger. I think what Mr. Billy did was wonderful and wish that there were more people that would do the same. Thank you so much for caring Mr. Billy, you are in my book a great person for what you did. May god reward you for helping a person in need at a desperate time.

I think that this was a great move by our University of Kentucky basketball coach. I think that this proves that the University has hired a man on integrity and compassion. This was a great move by our University of Kentucky basketball coach.

I think it was so nice of Billy G. to help this lady in need. I know a lot of people will say he just did it for publicity but I really think he has a big heart. I hope all the KY fans will give him a chance. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Good for Billy G! This shows what kind of heart this man has, and isn't such a hard-nosed person after all. I think that is awesome and maybe he will start setting up charitable organizations like the former coach did and do some good with all his money.

Posted by: David Location: Pulaski County on Feb 18, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Not only can Billy G. coach, he also has a good heart! Go Big Blue !!!!!!!!!!
