Kentucky National Campaign Donations Follow Trends

LEXINGTON, KY -- Kentuckians, so far, have donated $2.1 million to presidential candidates. And while the state's total donations amount to less than what has been pumped out of some towns, like Austin, Texas, the overall contribution trends in the Bluegrass follow what's happening nationally, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader in its Sunday edition.

Barack Obama, the Democratic senator from Illinois, has pulled in more money from Kentucky than any other candidate, relying on a slew of small checks from a wide swath of donors -- just as he's done across the country, the Herald Leader reports.

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has tapped numerous big-name party officials in the state, many of whom have given the maximum $2,300 for the primary. Some already have given another $2,300 for the general election.

On the Republican side, money is slowly trickling in to Arizona Sen. John McCain, which is consistent with the more cautious approach that many conservative national GOP figures have taken toward him.

Of course, not all of Kentucky's giving trends follow the nation's. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who has a comparatively small but excited base of support nationally, remains the top-grossing Republican candidate in Kentucky with $128,972, the newspaper reports.

The most recent campaign finance reports from the Federal Election Commission, however, show that Republicans McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, received the most money from Kentuckians in January.

On the Democratic side, Obama accepted nearly four times as much money as Clinton, $93,355 to $25,200 last month, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.
