"Stapler Bandit" Pleads Guilty

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to using a chrome-plated, pistol-grip staple gun to rob an ice- ream parlor and a fast-food restaurant.

Gerald A. Rocchi admitted Monday to holding up The Ice Cream Shop in Ashland and a Wendy's last fall. He was caught shortly after taking $195 from the ice cream parlor.

Rocchi reached a plea agreement with prosecutors that called for concurrent 10-year sentences. Rocchi won't be eligible for parole until he has served 85 percent of the sentence because a weapon was involved.

Under Kentucky law, the stapler qualifies as a weapon since the 32-year-old Rocchi told victims it was a gun and hid it from view.

Judge Marc Rosen will formally sentence Rocchi on April 9.
