Statewide Road Conditions Monitored From Frankfort Operations Center

The Transportation Operations Center is where crews look at road conditions all over the state, with about 300 cameras locked in, in various locations.

“We just kind of track it as it goes,” says Jeff Bibb of the Ky. Transportation Cabinet.

Dispatchers stay busy talking to those on the front lines, like salt truck drivers.

A lot of salt has already been used this winter. But fear not, officials say there's plenty for this weekend, which could be one of the worst storms in a quite some time.

More than 170,000 tons of salt remain.

“We've actually used just over half of our salt stockpile,” says Chuck Wolfe of the Cabinet.

Drivers will work in shifts around the clock in plowing and salting roads throughout the state. And the Operations center will be manned 24/7...in 3-8 hour shifts.

“We are entering information into our 511 system, that goes out into our telephone system, to our web site,” says Bibb.

Drivers can get that information by calling 511 or logging on to www.511.ky.gov.
