Governor Beshear says he backs a plan to provide what he calls "Alternative Incarceration" for some non-violent offenders.
Governor Beshear says he supports the senate bill that would keep substance abusers, child support violators, bad check writers and others out of jail.
The program could be implemented in about 6 months to a year if passed by lawmakers.
The bill is backed by senate republicans, but the governor says it's needed to save the state money..since Kentucky the nation's fastest growing prison population.
The bill could be heard in a house committee soon.
The governor says both republicans and democrats support it.
